The Oculus Quest is better than the Oculus Go, but not as good as the Oculus Rift S. However, it’s definitely the best VR headset on the market for $400. When it comes to mobile, the closest competitor would be the GearVR with the Galaxy S10 capable of 8k decoding. It just got confirmed that SLR app works on Quest.

It is expected that the Snapdragon 835 chipset will be capable of max 4K 60FPS video, which fits the current generation of 180º stereo videos available on SexLikeReal and other sites.

6DOF is a great process, but current gen videos are 3DOF – this means you can rotate your head all over the place, but there’s no way to physically move around. The SLR app has implemented a “head tracking” feature which allows the user to change the geometry of the video to catch up with head movements. It works great on zoom, especially with extra resolution available, but the image distorts at the sides. However, it’s still a great way to compensate for your head’s natural micro shaking.

An interesting issue is how it plays VR videos.

If it has the same architecture as the Go there should be a way to sideload the SLR app which has both one-click streaming like on tube sites and a local files video player like a normal VR video player. This would mean we can expect original 5K/6K quality footage streamed with viewport, where the file is cut into multiple pieces and some of these are played simultaneously depending on where it’s being watched. In this way, the resolution limitation is overcome, along with reduced heat and longer battery life. With 64GB or 128GB storage, you can’t fit more than a dozen videos on the system (or double than that, respectively), with no games installed (these can be up to 20GB for major titles). It’s clear that streaming would be a better option indeed.

VR videos can be streamed in-browser through WebVR player on sexlikereal.com or any other site but this is the worst possible quality because of the limitations of WebVR (the browser is used as a media engine instead of a dedicated player such as Exoplayer).

The Oculus Go headset had a modification that allowed 4800×2400@60FPS. We can only guess if it’s coming to Quest as well. That extra resolution would be highly appreciated given the higher display resolution can show it all. 180º video resolution per eye 2400px/180º=13.33px/º watched with 100ºFOV results in 1300x1300px upscaled on Quest’s 1600x1440px display.

So far, the Oculus Quest is definitively behind the current gen of VR videos when it comes to resolution. Let’s see what we get once it’s released. It would need a double 4K display, 150-170ºFOV, and 8192x4096x60FPS decoding to match current gen porn videos. The best result would be if it comes with 5G (this is expected 2nd half 2020). The closest competitor in mobile would be GearVR with Galaxy S10 capable of 8K decoding also on Snapdragon, but overall the Quest is superior.
